How the numbers are worked out
- The area
- Length × width of each bed, or the total area in square metres if you already know it.
- The depth
- How deep you will spread it, in millimetres. Garden suppliers commonly quote mulch by the cubic metre.
- The volume
- Area × depth gives cubic metres, plus the allowance you choose for settling and uneven beds.
- A rough cost
- Your supplier’s price per cubic metre times the volume. Delivery is usually extra.

How much does one cubic metre of mulch cover?
At 75 mm deep, one cubic metre covers about 13 square metres; at 100 mm, about 10. The calculator works it out for any depth you enter.
How deep should mulch be?
It depends on the mulch and the plants. Ask your landscaper or garden supplier; the calculator just works out the volume for the depth you choose.
Should I order extra?
Most people add a little for settling and uneven beds. Set the allowance to suit; 10% is a reasonable starting point to change.
