How the numbers are worked out
- Area
- Length × width of the area, or square metres directly.
- Paver size
- The face size of one paver in millimetres, for example 400 × 400.
- Count
- Area ÷ the area of one paver, plus your allowance, rounded up to whole pavers.
- Allowance
- Extra for cuts at edges and corners, and the odd breakage. Patterns with more cuts need more.

How many pavers per square metre?
Divide one square metre by the area of one paver. 400 × 400 mm pavers are 6.25 per square metre; 300 × 300 mm about 11.1; 600 × 300 mm about 5.6.
How much extra should I buy?
It depends on the shape of the area and the laying pattern: more corners and curves mean more cuts. Set the allowance to suit, and keep a few spare for repairs later.
Does it include the base and sand?
No, it counts pavers only. Ask your paver or landscape supplier about the base and bedding for your job.
