How the numbers are worked out
- Area
- Length × width, or enter square metres directly.
- Depth
- How deep you are filling, in millimetres. Raised beds are usually deeper than a top-up under turf.
- Volume
- Area × depth in cubic metres, plus your allowance. Soil settles once it is watered in.
- Cost
- Your supplier’s price per cubic metre times the volume, before delivery.

How do I work out cubic metres of soil?
Multiply the length by the width in metres, then by the depth in metres (millimetres ÷ 1,000). A bed 4 m by 1.5 m filled 300 mm deep needs 1.8 cubic metres before any allowance.
Why add an allowance?
Soil settles after it is watered and compacted, and beds are rarely perfectly square. Set the allowance to suit the job.
Does soil come in bags or by the cubic metre?
Both. For anything bigger than a few small bags, garden suppliers usually sell and deliver by the cubic metre.
